Mikupa Hong Kong 2012

Miku in Chinese dress. Picture from facebook.

Originally a voice synthesiser mascot, and now a virtual idol, Hatsune Miku performed her concert "Mikupa" in Hong Kong last Tuesday, and I managed to get a ticket to experience the performance myself!

To kill some time, there is a booth of Project Diva f (released in end of August), with a few PS Vitas ready for people to try out the game.

There is also a cosplayer cosplaying as Miku standing next to the Miku stand board

Got the ticket ready!

The venue just before the concert starts, a lot of green lightsticks are held ready in the standing area.

Miku on the stage. Apologies for the poor photo quality.

Kagamine Rin. A number of yellow lightsticks can be seen near the stage to represent Rin's colour. Kagamine Ren also performed a couple of songs too.

Megurine Luka performing on stage, and here purple lightsticks are seen quite clearly among the green ones, including one right in the foreground.

Mikupa stands for "Hatsune Miku Live Party". While it's not my first concert I've been, attending a concert for virtual singer is something of a first time for me. Even though it's virtual idol projected on a screen, the concert is pretty atmospheric! Lightsticks swinging together and change pattern almost in unison whenever the song switches from verse to chorus, or vice versa. While there are no mentions of restrictions in use of camera or recording devices, it's surprising seeing how some people are daring to the extent that they brought their iPads or similar devices to record the entire event from their locations or even at the aisles. ^^;

As for the projection, it looks a little pale or "ghostly" from where I am sitting, which is actually at the furthest row and at the highest point. However, looking at the big screens at the sides show that the projection actually looks pretty solid, which are seen from the ground level, so the pale appearance may actually be related to the position, and that where I was sitting was not so ideal. Apart from singing, Miku also spoke in Mandarin as well as Japanese. She didn't speak Cantonese, which is the main spoken language in Hong Kong, but nevertheless she pleases her fans just as much.

A couple of souvenirs at the end of the day: A file that comes free as a bonus item for ordering the ticket online, and a towel which was bought at the souvenir shop. Most of the popular items, such as t-shirts and the leek shape light balloons were long sold out by the time I got there.

The Mikupa concert had been a blast to attend. Big thanks to Sega and the music band that helps making this event happening! I do hope that Sega will get Miku to visit Hong Kong again in the near future! ^^

  1. I did saw much comments on Twitter for Miku's putonghua greetings in HK. It would be great if Miku could speak in Cantonese, or otherwise Japanese may also be fine here, too. Lets wish Miku will come again in the near future!!

    1. Indeed it would be nice and more fitting for the Hong Kong fans if Miku were to speak in Cantonese as well, but it's understandable that she spoke Mandarin to accomodate both Hong Kong and Taiwan concerts.

      Mikupa has always been a pleasant event for fans. I do hope that there will be more of such concerts again in the future!

  2. Oh wow, that's too bad your seat was so far away :< I think ours were pretty close but the screen they used in L.A. was still small compared to the one they used in Japan. And you guys got メルト! My friend and I were disappointed they didn't even play this song XD Oh well, them's the break. Glad you were able to get to the concert ^_^

    1. The seat is quite far away but that's what one gets for relatively cheap price ^^; Melt was a pleasant surprise to me. Even though the holograms were far away, the songs and atmospheres made it up pretty well. A nice experience I gotta say!
