Since 1995, Bandai's 1/100 scale Master Grade (MG) Gundam model line has produced various versions of RX-78-2 Gundam. Just prior to the Shizuoka Hobby Show, news leaked that Version 3.0 is to be announced. Let us have a look what it offers.

MG 1/100 Gundam Ver. 3.0 in a glance is an upscaled version of the RG 1/144 Gundam, which was based on the 1/1 scale Gundam now standing in Odaiba.

Sliding armour parts as seen on the leg. I remember that this is implemented on MGs as early as on Aile Strike Gundam back in 2003.

Here is a feature video for the MG Gundam 3.0 from Bandai Hobby's website to sum things up.

----

MG 1/100 RX-78-2 Gundam Version 3.0 will be released in August. According to AmiAmi online hobby store, the price will be around 4500 Yen or 4725 Yen with 5% sales tax.

With the latest iteration of Gundam announced, how many people are looking forward to buy and to build it? From my observation, while some are excited to it, others seem to get tired of seeing RX-78-2. For me, while I am not particular big on the original Gundam itself, I am a little surprised that the additional weapons are to be sold separately as a web shop item, which is quite a major departure from the usual patterns for past Gundam iterations. Nevertheless, the mechanical details do look quite immaculate, and fans should be pleased that a 1/100 scale version of the 1/1 Gundam in Odaiba to be avaialable soon (I hope).

  1. I love the sliding joints as it gives the model so much more flexibility. Would be a nice addition to a collection, but a pain to get that expansion pack here in the US!

    1. The sliding joint is quite a nice looking feature that not only looks cool, but it has a function as well. The expansion set can be obtained from proxy services, but doing so won't be cheap unfortunately! :\

    1. Confession time: I too have a RG 1/144 RX-78-2 unbuilt (bought from Gundam Front Tokyo last year), as well as a MG 1/100 Rx-78-3 G-3 OYW version somewhere underneath my bed. Can deal with the RG soon or later, but no idea when I would dare to touch the limited G-3 though... ^^;

  3. People who liked the RG should love this too.

    I'm disregarding this, however. Honestly don't see a reason for it. I thought the 2.0 was great, and we'd all like to see some forgotten designs get the MG treatment.

    1. You have a point that other designs could have been released as an MG models, as well as existing ones gettting an upgrade, while the original Gundam has undergone several redesigns (at least 5 before 3.0) already.

      I guess it'll be a matter of time?

    1. It would be nice to see more colour variants like the G-3 or Char's Gundam as you've said. Heck, I would also be interested if they finally make Prototype Gundam in MG!

  5. I probably sit out on this release but looking forward to other MGs using 3.0 tech ^^. Won't mind GP01 using this new frame. Though the RG is tempting but its tedious cutting so many small pieces..

    1. It will be interesting if future MGs will share similar proportions with RG counterparts, and vice versa. While they can look really detailed with a lot of movable parts, I will stick with the HG 1/144 models for the time being.
