1/100 Gundam Exia Roll Out Colour

Photobucket
Gundam Exia, ready to roll out!

Note: This review is on a sugumi (simply assembled) with some simple touchups.

Photobucket
The 1/100 Gundam Exia Roll Out Colour is a limited version of the normal Gundam Exia model, which has a grey and white colour scheme rather than the typical protagonist Gundam colours (i.e. blue + red + yellow + white).

Photobucket
There are some personal frustrations with this model (not the quality but its distribution). As it's an event limited model one cannot see it in shops usually, and I got this in a shop in Japan that focuses on resold limited goods and costs me a lot. Only to find out that the ACGHK2009 convention was selling them at regular prices a month later -_-

First appeared as a 1/144 scale limited yet simple First Grade kit with preorder for the Gundam 00 NDS game as well as an alternative colour scheme as a hidden unlockable feature in the game, Exia does appear in this colour scheme very briefly in the anime as a flashback (last episode of the first season, to be precise).

Photobucket
Ah sugar even with my lowly digital camera the macro shot picks up the dust I don't normally see -_- But I like those little stickers and the colourless "lens" things.

Photobucket
The engine and power source of Exia - the GN Drive. It creates and emits GN particles, which are used for flying, weapons, and even cloaking (self concealment from enemy's sight).

The green part is supposed to be a ring sticker but I've decided to paint it green with my Gundam marker pen to make it look like that the drive is active. Same being done to the centre of the torso.

Photobucket
Exia's equipment excluding the 4 beam sabres/daggers on the Gundam itself. All close combat oriented.

Photobucket
Exia equipped with the GN Sword as well as the GN Shield.

Photobucket
Exia flying. Yes, for those who haven't watch the series, that's how it flies. No need for wings or stabilisers etc and it will just fly by emitting those particles from the drive.

Photobucket
Shooting with Exia's only primary range weapon; its GN Rifle, or rather I'd call it GN Pew Pew Gun. Not only does it sound like one, the pilot Setsuna rarely hits anything with it anyway ^^;

Photobucket
Action pose with its signature GN Sword. The blade itself was just one single piece of plastic in dark grey, so I tried 'blinging' up the edge. Looks pretty nice to me now~ ^^

Will mention what I've used for blinging near the end.

Photobucket
The "I will chop ya" pose

Photobucket
Exia has beam sabres at the back of each shoulder. Found its placement a little odd when I first watched the series but well at least it can still grab one out when needed.

Photobucket
Posing with the beam sabres.

Photobucket
It also has two GN Daggers stored at the back, which look exactly the same as the beam sabres. My guess is that they're pretty much the same thing except they can behave differently depending on the length of the desired beam?

Photobucket
Exia has slots in its arms so it can attach weapons securely in addition to just holding them in the hands. Here, this beam rifle from my Gundam Astraea (which was reviewed sometime last year) is compatible with Exia, and I'm sure that there are more weapons from other Gundams in the series that are compatible with Exia too.

Photobucket
The last two weapons - GN Long Sword and GN Short Sword. Other than the different lengths the two swords are pretty much identical.

Photobucket
Exia is not supposed to have these two swords here as they were still being developed at the time of its rollout. It received them sometime in the series and it was pretty early on too.

Photobucket
The swords can be stored on each side of the hip, but the parts for storing them is unbelievably loose, and I'm just lucky that this one is holding just long enough for me to take this picture. Well it makes sense for leaving them out as they're still under development when it's rolled out ^^;

Photobucket
Gundam Astraea and Exia standing side by side. With Astraea being Exia's prototype, one can see some similarities between the two, like the legs, arms, and the torso.

Photobucket
The back view look less similar, but it's good to see the differences and similarities between the two.

Photobucket
As for what I've used to bling up the GN Sword (as well as the hasty works on the other swords), I've used a cheap nail varnish bought from a cosmetic chain store to do the job (with the help from my sister). Didn't have any masking tape to mask off unwanted areas, so clear sticky tapes did the work just find with a bit of care on cutting it out with a small pocket knife. That's how much I don't bother spending on proper art equipments as a casual person ^^;

While grey may seem like a dull colour, ironically I find it a refreshing change to the typical blue and red colours, and it makes the Gundam *seem* more realistic. Personally I like this colour scheme more, and that's why I've bought one despite the unecessary cost. For those who prefer Master Grade models, there's one coming out sometime in the future, which will be a Bandai Hobby Shop limited item - release date & price TBA.

Youtube vlogger Prime92 has made a review of this Exia too (she's a big fan of Exia, just like Ngee Khiong ^^):

On a final note, there are two different box arts for this particular limited model. One is just plain text saying it's an event limited, while the other is a monochrome version of the normal box art. The latter seems a bit more common and was seen available even in online shops before. Not sure about it now though. Despite that it's still worth getting if you like this sort of colour (well that's why I got myself a MG G-3 OYW version as well, which as similar colour scheme)!

  1. You know what this reminds me of? The SEED Gundams when their phase shift is turned off.

    Seeing as I haven't seen any gundam in a while there's not a whole lot I can say about this. However, doesn't the shots look really depressing?

  2. lol, I see the roll out colour exia often enough... not sure if it's event limited tho xP

  3. To be completely honest, I'm not too fond of Exia's design =(

    Nice figure though =)

  4. Really nice gunpla. But I'm more fond of the UC Gundams' looks. Never watched Gundam 00, maybe I'll like it better if I have?

    Zeta Gundam is still the sexiest imo...or GP03 Dendrobium. They might get pwn'd by Exia, but they look better. :P

  5. Woah! Nice job with that! I'm normally not that into gunpla - only got a 1/144 Stargazer, but this reminds me of it, and makes me want one too!

    Much prefer the grey color than the protagonist gundam colors.

    How much, and where did you buy it?

    Also, what's the diff between this and "FG"?

  6. The plain looking exia tempts me to get it for myself and colour it using markers. I'm sure i'll be happy to colour it. Haha

  7. I saw an MG for this lil B@stard once wonder if its official...

    Oh yeah Im starting to H8 exia >_<

  8. @ gndynames:
    Yea the two do have a resemblence, but Exia has no PS armour; it's just a colour scheme.

    Shots look depressing? Maybe it's due to the monochrome-like colour scheme, as well as the dark background and light settings that contribute to it. :\

    @ AstrayP03 (Zhe):
    This Exia was originally an event limited item, but it appears that like Blitz Clear Colour and Astray Blue Frame 2nd L Clear Colour versions, they seem to be appear a bit more often than other limiteds. However I see the latter two more often than Exia...

    @ Snark:
    Your honesty is well appreciated. I know you're not so big into real robots so that's ok ^^

    @ Tommy:
    Yea I'm getting more and more attached towards UC's designs as well as grunts. Zeta is definitely a good design and it doesn't look old school at all. I think I personally prefer the Zeta Plus~

    Gundam 00 is okay. It feels kinda different from other Gundam series, as Sunrise has deliberately let people with no experience with Gundam to do this one. You can give it a try, but do take the point that the first 10 episodes or so it's very plot driving.

    @ radiantdreamer:
    Gunpla are not too hard to assemble compared to proper models, and they look pretty good even without extra touchups!

    I got this Exia at a store that focuses on limited items. On HobbyWave online store it quotes the price as 27.50USD (I got mine at a really high price >_<;;). You may still be able to find it on some auctions and online stores. I heard that it's still commonly seen in stores in Malaysia.

    FG (First Grade) is usually for 1/144, and they are much simpler than the common (HG) High Grade models. The simplicity and low cost means it's probably intended for children. Others tend to go for High Grade or even more the 1/100s and the Master Grade (MG) models.

    @ Willie:
    Haha a colour-your-own Exia? ^^;

    @ GunStray:
    I know that there's a lot of hype with Gundam 00 in general, but does it bother you that much to hate it? :\

  9. Milking Cow cash fury by bandai, A very unrational reason ^^;

  10. @ GunStray:
    Yea Bandai does do a lot of milking strategies with all those recolouring and recently adding new parts to make a new release. Well, as cusomters, if there's anything we don't particularly like about, it wouldn't hurt to just ignore them, right? ^^;

  11. Awesome! I love the roll out colors, they look so great!

    Nice work my friend, what a great addition to your collection!

    Thank you! I personally really like the roll out colours, so I was determined to buy this instead of normal Exia~

  13. Ah that damn Dust!
    Our Mortal Enemy! I always realize the dust after taking all the pictures >.<

    ReplyDelete
  14. @ Blowfish:
    Agreed - our naked eyes don't seem to notice those pesky dust until we have the pictures, and only under a lot of light and in macro mode would the dust become properly visible -_-

  15. I certainly like the Roll-out color more than the RWB scheme ^^. Your built looks realll good, Q... especially on the GN Sword. I'm sure this model fits quite well with the Sentinel stuff :D

    ReplyDelete
  16. @ Z:
    Even without proper equipments, I'm happy with how the GN Sword turns out using everyday items ^^ And yes roll out colour looks more appealing, just like the G-3~

    I haven't gone much into Sentinel, but they do have some attractive designs out there, such as the Zeta Plus and the Xekueins~ I did consider getting either of the gunpla before :o
