Yesterday a video tape, now a DVD

Watching the new version of Hunter x Hunter anime series (which has been airing since October 2011) often makes me want to rewatch parts of the first anime series from 1999 for comparison. Seeing Wing-san holding what appears to be a DVD (or even a Blu-ray disc) in 2012 then him holding a video tape back in 1999 reminds me how much things have changed these days, even from these little details.

I remember watching the first anime series of Hunter x Hunter back in 1999, and while it didn't feel that long ago in my memories, it in fact has been more than 10 years ago already.

Time sure flies, and technology is a clear tell-tale sign of how much things have changed over the years, as they are some of the distinctive aspects that move on the most. Sometimes I wonder, if we are to look back at today's anime in, say, 10 or 20 years' time, will we find a lot of objects or aspects a little odd or out of place?

That's something interesting to think about there.

  1. Not only the change in technology, but you can see the background is different as well.

You have a whiteboard in the modern version while the 1999 version is a hanging plaque.

  2. I find it a bit scary to think that I'm also at the age where I can point out old technology in anime that I watched. With the way the world is going, I don't think many things will look familiar in a few decades.

  3. @ bluedrakon:
The different background is actually some minor object placements issue. The whiteboard is still there somewhere in the room in the old version, but the plaque isn't in the new version. The cratered wall is still there too.

    @ Nopy:
That reminds me of watching Steins;Gate last year, and in the series when the pager is mentioned most of the characters don't recognise it. There are other odd feelings I felt when I realise that floppy disks were still the common storage media in Gundam Wing. Such little things do make me wonder how I will feel when I look back at them again in many years' time.

  4. wow! i was really amaze about the new version of hunterxhunter because i haven't watch that for now i only knew the 1999 version bacause it is often aired on natonal tv.,hope i could watch that new version.

    1. The new one is worth a watch too. While the beginning was a bit too rushed, and that the music may not be as impressive as that in the 1999 version, other aspects make it still fun to watch!
